The House | 2006 Interior Remodel

Before we moved into the house in June 2000, a previous owner had painted the interior white: white walls, white beams, glossy white ceiling. I hated all that white, and immediately repainted the walls and beams, but the ceiling was too much of a challenge.

So this remodel was an ideal opportunity to re-paint the ceiling. With no wall surfaces, glass, or flooring to worry about only the newly stripped beams needed masking. Still, prepping the house for this paint project took two days, while painting the ceiling using an airless paint sprayer only took about two hours. At around $200, that sprayer was a terrific investment.

The ceiling is now a warm, light grey, which really warms up the house and is similar to the light gray stain originally used (traces of which were visible when the walls were removed). In addition, the flat ceiling paint have several advantages over the previous glossy finish: irregularities in the wood are less visible, and there is less light reflection. Of course it makes the house darker, but with so much floor-to-ceiling glass, that is not a concern.

On to new windows in the new dining room.
